Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are clearly identified from compression or extension springs due to their coils and their legs. They use a rotary or torque force in place of a linear force. This is in contrast to a compression spring which is designed to be compressed or an extension spring which is designed to be extended. The torsion spring has the same characteristics as the compression spring, but its essential role is its return.

Information about Torsion Springs

The identifying mark of torsion springs are their legs are of equal length unloaded at varying angles that give a rotary torque or force subject to the bending stress. In order to provide the necessary resistance suitable different leg ends need to be used to provide the correct resistance. These ends include straight leg twist, double twist, hinged, hook and straight offset ends Torsion springs have close wound coils and sometimes have space between the coils to reduce friction.

Our Qualified Engineers

These types of springs can be manufactured as single or double bodied. For them to perform best they are usually supported over a rod or a tube. If they do not have the support rod it can deflect under load spring because the body does not keep stationary.

For torsion springs to perform best they should be supported by a rod or tube. Without a rod or tube to keep the body stationary spring, it can deflect when under a load. A well designed torsion spring will be used in the direction of the winding of the coil which can be either in a clockwise or anticlockwise rotation and this is something that needs to be considered on initial design of the spring. This is another point to consider when space is limited. The most common material types for springs are music wire, stainless steel, and hard drawn Torsion springs can be manufactured from wire ranging from 0.3mm to 19mm diameter.
